Manganese is among the world's most widely used metals, ranking fourth after iron, aluminium and copper. Thousands of everyday metallic items require some percentage of manganese in their manufacture.Global production of manganese ore reached 33.7 Mt in 2006. The major suppliers such as China, South Africa, Australia, Brazil and Gabon,provided 80% of the international market.
Worldwide reserves of manganese ore containing >35% Mn were estimated at 440 Mt in 2006. Ukraine, India and Australia account for about 70% of the reserves. The remainder occurs in Brazil, China, Gabon, South Africa, and Mexico.Manganese isessential to iron and steel production.
Large parts of manganese ore is used to manufacture intermediate manganese ferroalloy products and electrolytic manganese for use in dry-cell batteries. Only a small amount of the ore is directly used in the steel making process.Some manganese is recovered through the reprocessing of scrap metals and steel slag, or the materials left over from the steel-making process.
Manganese ore can be mined by open pit quarrying or underground mining method according to ore deposit properties. Mining operations include the mining, crushing, grinding and screening of manganese, and ore handling and processing plant.
The mining of manganese ores is usually operated in open pits. Some ores are upgraded by washing, and undersized ores can be agglomerated by sintering. Several processes have been developed for mining seafloor nodules, but they cannot compete economically with the ready exploitation of high-grade terrestrial deposits.
Most manganese mines are open pit; some are underground.
