A quarry is an area from which granite, marble, limestone and other similar materials are extracted. A large open pit is the most familiar image of a quarry, but stone can be extracted from other places, too. Various techniques have been used in quarrying over the years with varying degrees of success; however, in modern times people are more aware of the environmental impact of quarrying. Today's methods of quarrying are technologically advanced and customized for the location.
Types of Quarries
In North America, quarrying is most often associated with deep pits. The top of the pit may be blasted off to get to the deeper rock, and pumps keep water from accumulating in the bottom. Boulder quarries are rocks left behind by glaciers, and the colonists who arrived in the 1600s used them extensively. Surface ledge quarries are exposed areas of stone on hillsteps, and the top layers are blasted off and split.
